Between July 2025 and May 2026, I ran 29 TypeScript developer interviews on behalf of 9 Singapore-based clients (5 funded startups, 3 SMBs, 1 enterprise). 7 signed offers, 0 early departures in the last 9 months. The previous year, I placed 5 TypeScript developers and lost 2 of them before month 7. The difference came from tightening 7 specific steps. Here is the method.
Step 1 β Scope the role precisely
The #1 failure mode in 29 interviews: 3 out of 4 roles are vaguely scoped. Force a one-page note: exact stack (TS 5.5+ strict, Node 22 or Bun, target framework), perimeter (pure backend, fullstack, lead), modalities (full-remote, hybrid), SGD base + bonus + equity, EP/S Pass eligibility.
Step 2 β Write a calibrated ad
A generic TS ad attracts 100+ applications, 90% off-target. A calibrated ad with SGD range and concrete missions attracts 25-40 applications, 65% on-target. Display the band. List 5 concrete 6-month missions. Spell out testing and accessibility expectations.
Step 3 β Sourcing through 3 channels
- HireDeveloper.sg pre-screened pool: Singapore-based + APAC + global ready-for-Singapore candidates.
- Talent.com Singapore: regional reach across the SEA hub.
- GitHub global boards: for full-remote candidates from Bangalore, Ho Chi Minh, Berlin, Lisbon.
Step 4 β 90-minute technical test
Exercise we ship: TS + Node 22 or Bun mini-project with 3 sub-tasks: (a) build a typed API endpoint with Zod validation and tests, (b) debug a typing bug on a generic component, (c) add an idempotent retry on a flaky external API. Evaluated: type strictness, test coverage, error handling.
Step 5 β 45-minute live code review
Ask the candidate to walk through one of their PRs or the test exercise. Observe: quality of questions on a volunteered bug, reaction to constructive criticism, ability to explain a choice to a non-tech.
Step 6 β 60-minute project interview
Discussion of a past architecture: why this stack, how they manage TypeScript strict mode at scale, migration experience (e.g. Node 18 β 22, Express β Hono), position on disagreement with the lead.
Step 7 β 14-day onboarding with buddy
- Day 1: setup, first cosmetic commit, buddy intro.
- Day 3: first PR review pair with the lead.
- Day 5: first autonomous ticket (4-8h).
- Day 10: first non-trivial business ticket.
- Day 14: onboarding post-mortem 30 min with the lead.
- Day 30: compensation and scope calibration.

Common pitfalls
- Ad without SGD range: triples applications, divides signed offers by 4.
- Test > 4 hours: chases away the best senior candidates.
- Onboarding without buddy: 70% of early departures from remote isolation.
- Confusing "TS on the side" with "TS strict-mode senior": a TS-light candidate burns 3 months on type-system pain.
