TL;DR

  • •What happened: on 2 November 2026 Profound made Singapore its Asia Pacific headquarters, with a CBD office in Q4 and more than 15 local hires planned over 12 months. Every named role is commercial: a general manager, account executives, go-to-market associates, engagement managers, account managers.
  • •Why that matters: a headquarters of record and an engineering centre of record are different things. Reading this as engineering competition inflates your view of the market, and I had been doing exactly that with four announcements this year.
  • •What it does compete for: the band between sales and engineering, which is where we are genuinely thin. Plus one figure in the release that needs reading twice before anybody funds a workstream off it.

I keep a running list of companies setting up in Singapore, and until Monday I used it as a proxy for how hard our next engineering hire would be. Another funded AI company lands, another bidder for the same shortlist, tighten the band. Then I read the role list attached to one of these announcements properly, line by line, and there was not a single engineer in it. Which raised an uncomfortable question about the other entries on my list, because I had never read any of them line by line either.

What Was Announced on 2 November

Profound, a platform that measures how brands appear inside answers from AI search and conversational tools, established Singapore as its Asia Pacific headquarters. The base houses regional leadership, go-to-market and customer teams covering Southeast Asia, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, with an office opening in the Central Business District in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The hiring detail is specific and worth quoting exactly. The company plans to hire more than 15 employees in Singapore over the next 12 months, including a General Manager for Asia Pacific, account executives, go-to-market associates, engagement managers and account managers. Members of its New York team are also expected to relocate to Singapore for a year to help establish the regional team and transfer working practices. It follows a US$180 million Series D raised in September 2026, co-led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins, and the company ran a local recruitment event on 30 October ahead of the announcement.

Both quoted principals described the same thing. In the launch release, James Cadwallader, Co-Founder and CEO, said “Singapore is the natural home for our next chapter. It’s where the region’s biggest brands make decisions”, framing the choice around proximity to customers rather than to talent. In the same release, Ling Yuan Chun, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Ventures at the Singapore Economic Development Board, said the company “will create new job opportunities in Singapore including management, go-to-market and headquarter roles”. Management, go-to-market, headquarters. Nobody involved claimed otherwise, and nobody said engineering.

đź’ˇ Our Expert Take

The signal is in the official description of the jobs, not in the funding number. “Management, go-to-market and headquarter roles” is a precise phrase and it does not include building the product. A company can put its regional headquarters of record in Singapore while its platform work stays where it was written, and that is the ordinary shape of a go-to-market expansion. The US$180 million is what makes the story read like a talent event. The role list is what tells you it is not one.

The Conflation That Had Been Costing Me Accuracy

A regional headquarters and an engineering centre are different commitments with different half-lives. A headquarters of record is leadership, revenue coverage and a legal entity close to buyers. An engineering centre is a long bet on a local talent pool: harder to move, slower to build, and the only one of the two that bids against your requisitions.

Treating the first as evidence of the second is an easy mistake because the press coverage reads identically. Same funding figure, same expansion language, same photograph of a skyline. But the downstream effect on your hiring is close to opposite. A go-to-market expansion competes with your commercial team and occasionally raids the customer-facing edge of your engineering org. An engineering build competes with your core shortlist for years.

We saw a cleaner version of the same distinction days ago when a global bank placed its second AI institute in Hong Kong rather than Singapore. The lesson there was that a regional announcement is not local headcount. This one is the mirror image: local headcount that is not engineering headcount. Both get filed under Singapore AI momentum, and neither belongs in the column I had been putting them in.

The 3 Things I Changed

1. The list got a second column. Every entry now records what kind of presence was announced: headquarters and revenue, or engineering build. I went back through this year’s entries and four of them were go-to-market expansions that I had been carrying as engineering competition. That is four announcements of imagined pressure on a shortlist nobody was bidding for, and it had quietly made our last two offers more generous than they needed to be.

2. I looked at where we are genuinely exposed. The roles named here, engagement managers and account management in particular, sit in the band between sales and engineering. That band is thin everywhere and it is especially thin in Singapore, and the people in it are often not on anybody’s engineering headcount because their title says engineer and their week says customer. We have two of those. Both are now in a market they were not in last month, and I had not modelled either of them as at risk. Our notes on retaining senior developers in Singapore cover why this group tends to leave without ever appearing in a regretted-attrition forecast.

3. I put a name against the AI visibility question before a vendor does. The category this company sells into is real: how a brand gets named, compared or omitted inside a generated answer is a different problem from where a page ranks in a list. Our own answer to who owns that was an engineer doing it informally between tickets. That is a staffing decision made by default, and defaults get expensive once a sales team is in the building.

The Figure in the Release I Would Read Twice

Alongside the expansion, the company published a data point from its own analysis: a 23 percent increase in the share of conversations involving researching, comparing or buying products and services between January and September 2026, drawn from 1.8 million anonymised Singapore conversations with two major assistants. It is the number most likely to end up in somebody’s internal business case this month.

It deserves care, and credit where it is due: ContentGrip flagged the arithmetic rather than reprinting it, noting that this is a relative increase in the share of commerce-related conversations and not a 23 percentage point jump, that it measures conversations rather than purchases, and that the release did not disclose enough about sampling or intent classification for an independent assessment. All three caveats matter if the figure is about to justify a budget.

None of that makes the underlying shift unreal. Vendor data on a category the vendor sells is directional evidence, which is a legitimate thing to have and a poor thing to size a workstream with. The test I would apply before funding anything is the dull one: name the decision that would change if the number were half as large, or twice. If no decision changes, it is a dashboard, and a dashboard does not need a hire.

Back to the List

The list is more useful with two columns than it was with one, and it is shorter in the column I care about. That is not reassuring news, exactly. It means the pressure I had been attributing to new entrants is coming from somewhere else, most likely from the same established employers it was always coming from, and I had given myself an easy explanation instead of looking.

The practical follow-ups are small. Re-read the role list in every expansion announcement before it touches a plan, which takes two minutes and would have saved me four wrong entries. Identify the people whose title says engineer and whose week says customer, because they are the ones this kind of announcement actually reaches. And settle who owns the AI answer question internally while it is still a choice. Our notes on engineering capacity planning in Singapore cover how to hold that second group in a plan at all, since they rarely appear cleanly on either side of the org chart.

đź’ˇ Our Expert Take

One exercise if you keep a list like mine: go back through this year’s Singapore expansion announcements and mark each one headquarters or engineering, using only the roles actually named in the release. Most teams find that their sense of a tightening engineering market is built substantially from go-to-market news. That does not mean the market is loose. It means you have been attributing real pressure to the wrong source, and you cannot respond to a competitor you have misidentified.

FAQ: the Profound Singapore Headquarters and Local Hiring

What did Profound announce in Singapore on 2 November 2026?

Profound, an AI search and brand visibility platform, established Singapore as its Asia Pacific headquarters. The Singapore base houses regional leadership, go-to-market and customer teams covering Southeast Asia, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, with an office opening in the Central Business District in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company said it plans to hire more than 15 employees in Singapore over the following 12 months, naming a General Manager for Asia Pacific, account executives, go-to-market associates, engagement managers and account managers. Members of its New York team are expected to relocate to Singapore for a year to help establish the regional team. The expansion follows a US$180 million Series D round in September 2026 co-led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins, and a local recruitment event held on 30 October.

Does a regional headquarters announcement mean more competition for Singapore engineers?

Not directly, and that is the useful part. Every named role in this announcement is commercial or customer facing: general manager, account executives, go-to-market associates, engagement managers, account managers. The Economic Development Board described the jobs created as management, go-to-market and headquarter roles. A regional headquarters of record and an engineering centre of record are different things, and a company can place one in Singapore while product and platform work stays where it was built. Counting announcements like this as engineering competition inflates your sense of the market and leads to defending requisitions that were never contested.

Which Singapore roles does this kind of expansion actually compete for?

The band between sales and engineering: engagement managers, solutions and implementation people, technical account managers, and the engineers who have drifted into customer-facing work because they are good at it. Those profiles are scarce in Singapore, they are expensive to replace, and they are frequently the least visible on an engineering org chart because their title says one thing and their day says another. A vendor opening a regional headquarters hires exactly there first. If you have an engineer who spends most of their week in customer calls, that person is now in a market they were not in last month.

What should an employer do about the AI search visibility question this raises?

Decide who owns it before a vendor decides for you, and write down what you would accept as proof. The commercial case for this category rests on how often a brand is named, compared or omitted inside a generated answer, which is a genuinely different problem from ranking a page in a list. The honest position is that visibility can become a reporting metric well before it is a proven revenue metric, so the question to settle internally is which decision would change if the number moved. If nothing would change, you have a dashboard rather than a workstream, and that is worth knowing before anybody is hired or a tool is bought.

Bring us the requisition before you re-price it.

We will tell you who is genuinely bidding for that profile in Singapore, flag the customer-facing engineers your plan is not tracking, and set the walk-away number before the first call. Related reading: capacity planning, compensation packages, and our hiring notes.
